Technology is changing the way we learn, work and communicate and for teachers, keeping up with these changes is becoming increasingly important. Young African Women Initiatives (YAWI), believes that creating meaningful change starts with giving people the knowledge, skills and confidence to embrace new opportunities.

As part of our commitment to strengthening STEM and digital skills, YAWI organized a practical training session for Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers in Nakuru, facilitated by MG IHub. The training brought teachers together for an opportunity to learn, ask questions, share experiences and explore how technology can make their everyday work easier and more effective.

One of the key areas covered was Artificial Intelligence (AI). Rather than looking at AI as something complicated or distant, the session focused on practical ways teachers can use AI in their day-to-day work. From supporting lesson preparation and generating ideas to helping organize information and creating learning materials, teachers explored how these tools can complement their work in the classroom.

But with new technology also comes responsibility. The training therefore went beyond simply learning how to use AI. Teachers discussed privacy, ethics, cybersecurity, online safety and responsible use of technology. These conversations were important because as technology becomes more common in schools, teachers also play an important role in helping learners understand how to use digital tools safely and responsibly.

What stood out throughout the session was the curiosity in the room. Teachers were willing to ask questions, share what they already knew and most importantly try something new. There were moments of discovery, discussion and even a few “I didn’t know AI could do that!” moments.

For us at YAWI, this is what STEM empowerment is about. It is not only about introducing people to technology but also about creating spaces where they feel confident enough to explore it, question it and use it in meaningful ways.

By strengthening teachers’ digital skills, YAWI also contributing to the wider STEM ecosystem. Teachers have the opportunity to pass on the knowledge and confidence they gain to their learners, helping more young people see technology and STEM as spaces where they belong and can thrive.

YAWI will continue creating opportunities that connect people with knowledge, skills and technology, while encouraging more girls and young people to explore the possibilities within STEM.
